“NKI is finally set. We have the foundations in place for the quantum leaps we want to take.”

NKI is a Norwegian provider of online courses and upper secondary education, with roots in distance learning going back to 1910. 3,400+ active students, 140+ courses, fully digital.

When CDO Jon Erik Andersen joined a year ago, he set out to rebuild the school's entire digital infrastructure: new website, new CRM, new student portal and automated internal processes. KonversAI became a central part of that transformation.

The baseline

Before KonversAI, NKI had at least one person staffing support and inbox every single day. A steady stream of manual cases — straightforward questions about enrollment, course content, exam dates, financing through Lånekassen. Questions that had clear answers, somewhere, if the student could find them.

The problem wasn't complexity. It was availability. NKI's students study on their own terms, often in the evenings and on weekends. Support was open Monday to Friday, 09 to 16. The gap between when students needed help and when they could get it was structural.

What changed

NKI made KonversAI their first-line support. The team of 4 to 5 people working across support, advisory, and sales essentially handed over the front line to the assistant.

The numbers shifted immediately. In the first weeks, automation sat at 60 to 70 percent. As the team improved their knowledge base based on insights from the platform, that number climbed steadily. Today it's approaching 80 percent, and still rising.

But the most telling number isn't the automation rate. It's the volume. Since going live with KonversAI, inbound customer dialogues are up 200 percent.

That increase isn't a sign of more problems. It's a sign that students who previously gave up or waited until Monday are now getting answers around the clock. The demand was always there. It just had nowhere to go.

The knowledge base became the real product

NKI quickly discovered that KonversAI wasn't just answering questions. It was revealing where the answers were missing.

Every time the assistant couldn't resolve a query, it exposed a gap in NKI's documentation, FAQ, or website content. Outdated information. Unclear processes. Pages that hadn't been touched in years.

The team started using KonversAI as a continuous content audit tool, systematically improving their knowledge base based on real student behaviour rather than internal assumptions about what students might ask.

That feedback loop has had a compounding effect. As the knowledge base improves, the assistant gets better. As the assistant gets better, it surfaces more nuanced gaps. The result is a knowledge base that NKI now considers strong enough to become the foundation for future voice support through the same assistant.

Proactive problem solving

One example shows where this is heading. NKI's platform picked up a payment issue in the logs before the student had made contact. The team reached out and fixed it right away.

KonversAI is one piece of that platform. It sits alongside the CRM, the student portal and the payment flow, and shares context with them. When something goes wrong in one place, the team sees it and can act before it turns into a support case. That's a different model from traditional support. Instead of waiting for a complaint, the platform spots the problem, provides the context, and the team acts on it. Support becomes prevention.

First-line is just the beginning

With first-line support handled by the assistant, NKI's team now spends their time where it creates the most value: genuine human advisory. Study guidance, career counseling, enrollment conversations. The kind of interactions that drive new business and student retention.

The shift has been significant enough that NKI has already asked KonversAI to build a second-line assistant. The idea: an assistant that gradually learns from the more advanced cases currently being escalated to humans, so that over time, a larger share of second-line support can also be handled automatically.

The long-term vision is an orchestration between two assistants. One handles the open, unauthenticated front line. The other operates behind login, with personalised help based on the student's own enrollment. Together, they cover the full student lifecycle.

The bigger picture

KonversAI is one piece of that infrastructure. But it's a piece that touches the student experience directly, every day, around the clock. More questions answered. More time for the conversations that matter. And a knowledge base that gets better with every interaction.

The team went from a traditional inbox to an AI-first support model in a very short time frame. The result: students get help when they need it, the team focuses on value, and the entire organisation learns from every question asked.
